The annual Outback Bowl is held at Raymond James Stadium every New Year’s Day since 1999; it had been played at Tampa Stadium from 1982 to 1997 before being moved to Raymond James; this gave Tampa Bay its first major college football bowl game since 1960. Other notable events include Super Bowl XXXV on January 28, 2001 which saw Raymond James Stadium become one of three venues (along with Giants Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey and Alltel Stadium in Jacksonville) where five Super Bowls have been played; this record was later matched by Patriots Gillette Stadium when they won another Super Bowl title following 2010–11 season. On January 9th 2009 it hosted UFC Fight Night 19: Florian vs Velasquez which marked one of only four times since UFC sold out all 20 thousand seats that event took place between two former champions.

The stadium seats 65,890, and is expandable to 75,000 for special events. The seating capacity can be adjusted by moving the upper deck seats closer to the field (as is done for lower-profile events) or pushing them back for larger crowds. Individual seats in the bowl are blue with orange trim.
