Amalie Arena is home to the Tampa Bay Lightning of the National Hockey League. It’s also where you’ll find concerts, conventions, and other special events.
The Lightning are the only major sports team in Tampa Bay, so it’s easy to see why they’re such a big deal here. Other teams in the area include:
- The Rays (MLB)
- Buccaneers (NFL)
- Rowdies (USL Pro soccer)

The arena opened in 1996 as the Ice Palace. It was built at a cost of $110 million and has a seating capacity of over 20,000 for ice hockey, concerts and other events. The naming rights have changed several times since then; after being known as the Ice Palace from its opening until 2005, it became known as St. Pete Times Forum from 2005 to 2013 and finally Amalie Arena from 2014 onwards.

The Amalie Arena opened on September 16, 1996. Tampa Bay was awarded an NHL expansion franchise in 1990, and the Lightning were formed to play in the new arena. They played their first game at the arena on October 7, 1993 against their expansion cousins from Ottawa. The game ended with a 2-1 win for Tampa Bay and has been known as “The Miracle on Ice”, since former Lightning players Rob Ramage and Kevin Weekes combined for 63 saves—a number no goalie duo has matched since!
Upon the death of former owner Malcolm Glazer in 2014, the Glazer family sold a controlling interest in the arena’s management company back to their original majority partner on February 11, 2015.
The Glazer family owned both the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Manchester United, so with such an investment in sports teams, it made sense that they would own a stake in an arena as well.
