Cause of Port of Tampa fire identified
Friday’s two-alarm fire near the Port of Tampa was caused by spontaneous combustion of the metal materials involved, according to Hillsborough County Fire and Rescue.
Workers at the Trademark Metals Recycling Facility on Port Sutton Road told HCSO investigators that they were working in a pile of metal material, such as used appliances, late Friday afternoon when it began to smoke. The metals involved had begun oxidizing, and the resulting heat was trapped in the pile, leading to the fire.
Firefighters needed nine hours to completely douse the fire, and 11 hours to clear the scene. No injuries were reported.
