PETERSBURG – Badfish, a tribute to Sublime, will bring their Indian Summer Tour to the central Florida with a performance on Saturday, Nov. 19, 8 p.m., at Jannus Live, 200 First Ave. N., St. Petersburg.
Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 the day of the show.

Visit www.jannuslive.com or call 727-565-0550.

According to a press release from Michael J. Media Group, over the past 15 years Pat Downes, Scott Begin and Joel Hanks – collectively known as Badfish – have traversed borders, adopted friends, cruised highways, popped tires, loitered in parking lots, stormed clubs, blazed festivals and raised the decibel level across their broad tour terrain. Throughout their eminent career, their mission has remained the same: bring the awesome music and message of Sublime to their spirited fans, wherever they may be. In paying tribute to one of the most galvanizing musical acts in history, Badfish try to revive the Sublime experience by keeping faithful to their down-to-earth, punk rock attitude. Eschewing wigs and gimmicks, Badfish’s philosophy is to deliver Sublime’s music faithfully, spread good vibes, and push the envelope of performance to create a concert experience that surges with energy and originality.

Formed at the University of Rhode Island in 2001, Badfish have gone from packing fraternity basements to selling out prominent venues across the country, including House Of Blues in various cities; New Jersey’s Starland Ballroom; Town Ballroom in Buffalo, New York; and Revolution in Fort Lauderdale. In the process of mastering their act and multiplying their fans, Badfish have passed many milestones, including the recording of three live albums, performing with musical heroes The Wailers, and sharing the stage with members of Sublime, including saxophonists Todd Foreman and Tim Wu, and Sublime’s original drummer Bud Gaugh.

While they’re proud of these achievements, their focus remains on their audience. Whether they’re playing a 50-person barroom or a raging three-day festival, Badfish strive to rock the house. No matter the size (or smell) of the venue, Badfish aim to throw a party at their shows that will bring together their eclectic listeners and conjure the thrill and the power of the music of Sublime.

Article published on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2016

Copyright © Tampa Bay Newspapers: All rights reserved.
(Why?)
ST. Over the years, contributions total nearly $100,000.

Bands set to perform

Following is a look at some of the bands scheduled to perform:

• Alfonso Ponticelli – Alfonso Ponticelli & Swing Gitan is Chicago’s premier gypsy-jazz band. Their music is a vibrant, upbeat and passionate blend of American jazz, gypsy jazz, Flamenco and world folk music threaded together through virtuoso improvisation. Composer and band-leader Ponticelli invites some of Chicago’s top talent for musical conversation and an always lively dose of some of the best spontaneous co-arranging, with top artists including the current lineup featuring John Bany, bass; Eric Schneider, clarinet/sax; Steve Gibons, violin; Bob Rummage, drums; Rami Gabriel, oud/guitar; and Alex Udvary, cimbalom.

• Bill Allred’s Classic Jazz Band – More than 20 years ago, Bill Allred’s Classic Jazz Band was born in Orlando, founded by a group of former musicians of Walt Disney World and Rosie O’Grady’s. After performing at a number of regional jazz festivals, they solidified their sound when they realized there was a niche for their signature little big band style. The band has released more than a dozen albums.

• Cornet Chop Suey – Named after a Louis Armstrong composition, Cornet Chop Suey has released nine CDs, including their “Saint Louis Armstrong,” featuring songs they perform in their Louis Armstrong show. The band includes Brian Casserly on trumpet, Tom Tucker on cornet, Jerry Epperson on reeds, Brett Stamps on trombone, Paul Reed on piano, Jay Hungerford on bass and John Gillick on drums.

• Dave Bennett Quartet – This young Michigan clarinetist has earned a reputation playing in a style and sound inspired by his personal hero, Benny Goodman. Bennett fuses serious jazz improvisation with a host of modern pop influences. He names Alice Cooper, Stevie Ray Vaughan and Chris Isaak among his influences.

• La Lucha – According to the band’s Facebook page, La Lucha is a Tampa Bay based trio that consists of three best friends from three different parts of the world: Colombia, Mexico & United States. Its members are Alejandro Arenas, bass; Mark Feinman, drums; and John O’Leary, piano. La Lucha’s repertoire is a diverse mixture of jazz standards, Latin-inspired rhythms and original compositions. The band seeks to create music that transcends genres and classifications.

• Nate Najar – An American guitarist, composer and producer, Najar’s expressive blend of phrasing, groove and rhythmic refrain delivers compositions informed with his passion for all music, from traditional jazz, to blues, gospel, and Brazilian beats. This determined musical interpreter with an old soul is singlehandedly reintroducing the finger-style nylon string classical guitar technique to a new generation of music lovers.

• The Midiri Brothers Jazz Band – Since graduating from Glassboro State College in the 1980s, the Midiri Brothers have made jazz and classical music the focus of their lives. Initially, they worked the concert circuit in Philadelphia, New York and Atlantic City. They accepted an invitation to open the Great Connecticut Jazz Festival – an event they return to often. Expanding their horizons, they have appeared at many west coast jazz festivals including Mammoth Lakes Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, The Pismo Jubilee By The Sea Jazz Fest, Redwood Coast Music Fest and Sun Valley Swing-n-Dixie Jazz Jubilee.

• Ken Peplowski – After a year of college, Peplowski joined the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra under the direction of Buddy Morrow. In 1980, he moved to New York City, and was soon playing in a variety of settings, from Dixieland to avant-garde jazz. Eventually, he wound up signing with Concord Records, under the tutelage of Carl Jefferson, the founder and president. There, he recorded close to 20 albums as a leader. The litany of musicians Peplowski has collaborated with includes Mel Torme, Leon Redbone, Charlie Byrd, Peggy Lee, George Shearing, Madonna, Hank Jones, Dave Frishberg, Rosemary Clooney, Tom Harrell, James Moody, Cedar Walton, Houston Person, Steve Allen, Woody Allen and Erich Kunzel.

That’s just a sampling.
