Tampa police fatally shoot man wielding machete

Tampa police said officers were forced to shoot and kill a man who refused to drop a machete Saturday night.

Police said about 6:30 p.m., they went to a home in the 1800 block of Marvy Avenue, where a man with a machete was in a room with his cousin, a 17-year-old girl.

Police said they ordered the man, identified as Sidney T. Richardson IV, 48, of Brandon, to drop the machete, but he refused. The officers used a taser, but the man still did not drop the blade.

Officers said the man was holding the machete in a threatening manner, and fearing for their safety and the safety of the girl, officers shot him.

Richardson died of his wounds.

The officers have been put on paid administrative leave.

The officers and the girl were not injured.
